The Deadbeat Bang Of Heartbreak City

marxalot Beauty is an overriding concern in this record. It's there in the opening, a few bars of cello drifting in gently and spilling over as the rock kicks off, itself beautiful according to its kind; themes bubble up in unguarded moments, strains of vulnerability not despite the kick drums and the guitars but along with them. It flows through the record, not just beauty but a concern with beauty, an attempt to create, sustain, or perhaps make a space for beauty amid the chaos.

Ryan Johanson Beach Slang's third proper full-length feels more like an old-school rock and roll record than their first two, which were more straightforward punk-rock. I'm also detecting a stronger Replacements vibe too, especially on Tommy In the 80s which seems destined to become one of my favorite songs of 2020. Also, I was pleasantly unprepared for just how somber the closing track Bar No One is. I've heard Quiet Slang before but there's something especially personal about that one. Favorite track: Tommy In The 80s.
